Syndopa is a combination medication prescribed to alleviate symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as muscle stiffness, tremors, spasms, and impaired muscle control. Its active components are Levodopa and Carbidopa.
Levodopa is transformed into dopamine in the brain, a neurotransmitter whose deficiency is linked to Parkinson's disease symptoms. Carbidopa prevents the early breakdown of Levodopa before it can reach the brain and exert its effects.
Avoid taking Syndopa if you have recently used an MAO inhibitor like furazolidone, isocarboxazid, phenelzine, or tranylcypromine in the past few weeks. This medication should also be avoided if you are allergic to Carbidopa, Levodopa, or Entacapone, if you have narrow angle glaucoma, unusual skin lesions, or a history of melanoma (skin cancer).
Administer Syndopa strictly as per your doctor’s instructions or as outlined on the medication label. Do not change the dosage unless advised by your doctor. Additionally, do not continue taking Syndopa beyond the prescribed duration. All medications are accompanied by a patient leaflet; consult it for specific details regarding that medication.
If you forget to take a dose of Syndopa, do so as soon as you remember. However, skip the missed dose if it is nearly time for your next dose. Taking doses too close together can result in excessive medication levels in your system, which may be harmful.
Common side effects of Syndopa include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach upset, loss of appetite, dry mouth, or difficulty sleeping. If these side effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor immediately. Syndopa may also cause saliva, sweat, or urine to appear dark (red, brown, or black), which is harmless but could stain your clothes.
Although serious side effects from Syndopa are rare, they can occur. Some serious effects may include involuntary movements (such as eyelid twitching), fainting or falling, difficulty swallowing, stomach or abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, vision changes (blurred or double vision), muscle pain, black or tarry stools, mood or behavioral changes, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts.
The aforementioned side effects are not exhaustive; you may experience or observe other reactions related to Carbidopa and Levodopa. If you encounter any severe side effects due to this medication, contact your doctor immediately.
